As we enter the winter season, we want to remind families that our general threshold for canceling school due to cold is when wind chill temperatures fall between -25 to -30°F. At those levels, the National Weather Service typically issues a Wind Chill Warning.
Looking ahead to tomorrow morning, temperatures are forecasted to be around -14°F at 6:00 a.m. , so we do not anticipate any delays or cancellations at this time.
Students typically remain indoors for recess when temperatures are below 0°F, but we still ask that all students come to school dressed warmly, especially those riding the bus. Having proper winter gear is important in case of any unforeseen delays.
Thank you for your continued patience and support as we navigate this early start to winter!

How Weather Decisions Are Made:
Your child’s safety is our top priority. When winter weather occurs, Maquoketa Community Schools begins assessing road conditions early—between 4:30–5:00 a.m. Tara Notz drive district roads alongside Scott Hansen, Transportation Director, and they consult with law enforcement, local county officials, Superintendents of neighboring school districts, and weather forecasts to make the most informed decision possible. When a decision is made, I am informed as soon as possible. Because conditions can vary across our district and change quickly, they strive to make announcements by 6:00 a.m. via phone, text, email, our website, Facebook, and local media outlets.
Virtual Learning Days:
If school is canceled due to weather, Maquoketa CSD/Sacred Heart will use one of the five virtual learning days approved by the state. These days allow us to maintain learning without needing to add make-up days later. Virtual learning is only used when school is canceled for the entire day, not for late starts or early dismissals.
Virtual Learning Packets:
-Learning packets were sent home during conferences. If you need a new one, please contact your child's teacher or principal.
-Activities focus on review and enrichment with a mix of “Must Do” and “May Do” tasks from classroom and specials teachers.
-“Must Do” assignments must be returned to count for attendance unless your child was already absent or ill.
Thank you,
Erik Rockwell, Principal
